I'm guessing the scratch is rough enough that it's just damaging the seal. You probably can pull the cam with the head still on the motor, It won't be easy though. The "right" way to do the job is remove the valve cover, timing belt, then cam cap. The cam cap has a bunch of allen (hex) and Torx Plus 40 bolts that need removal.
