That wont stop the notchy feel, but it should make it feel easier to get into gear. A heavier shift knob will help mask it. It is only supposed to be torqued to about 7-8 ft.-lbs. and if it's overtightened it can make shifting hard and notchy. Back it off and use small hand wrenches to tighten it just past snug.
